How TikTok advertising works in 2026, from In-Feed and Spark Ads to creative for the For You feed, Smart+, TikTok Shop, bidding, a performance playbook and measurement.

TikTok ads run between the videos of the For You feed, full screen and sound on, and the ones that work look as if they belong there. This guide explains how the platform works in 2026 and how to run it for performance. It uses one example throughout: a skincare brand selling a serum on its own site and through TikTok Shop.

Why TikTok

The feed is built on recommendation rather than follows. People see what TikTok predicts they'll watch, mostly from accounts they don't know. That makes it good at introducing new products, and demanding on creative: an ad competes with the best videos of the day for the same few seconds of attention.

It's also a place to sell. With TikTok Shop, people buy without leaving the app, in a growing list of markets: Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland joined in June 2026.

How an ad reaches someone

Every impression is an auction. TikTok says it "ranks ads by how much advertisers bid and how relevant the ads are to users", and relevance shows in how people respond. In practice creative decides much of your cost: an ad people watch and act on wins more auctions for the same bid.

A campaign sets the objective, such as traffic, lead generation, app promotion or sales. Its ad groups set the budget, audience, placements and bidding, and its ads carry the creative.

Ad formats

Three formats do most of the work.

CompareWhat it isSpecs and notes
In-Feed adA video in the For You feed, marked Sponsored, with a call-to-action button9:16 recommended, at least 540×960, up to 10 minutes. Captions can't carry links, @mentions or hashtags
Spark AdA real post run as an ad, from your account or a creator'sNo length limit. Views, likes, comments, shares and follows go to the original post
TopViewThe first video people see when they open the appFull screen and booked in advance for reach. Check the current specs with TikTok

Spark Ads

Spark Ads turn a post that already works into an ad. For a creator's post, the creator switches on ad authorisation, chooses how long the permission lasts and shares a code, which the advertiser adds in Ads Manager. Everything the ad earns goes to the original post, so the social proof stays in one place.

For skincare, a creator's honest three-week routine often does better than the brand's studio video. Spark Ads let you put money behind it without copying it.

Creative for the feed

TikTok's best-practice advice fits on a card:

  • vertical 9:16, at least 720p, with sound or music;
  • the proposition in the first three seconds, and the hook within the first six;
  • on-screen text at five to ten words a second, inside the safe zone that TikTok's buttons and caption leave free (TikTok publishes templates);
  • an unpolished, people-first style that fits the feed;
  • a clear call to action.

A reliable structure for performance ads is result, problem, proof, offer: show the after first, name the problem, prove it, then make the offer.

Smart+ and automation

Smart+ is TikTok's automated campaign type. It can take over budget allocation, placements, which combinations of your creatives run and generated variations of your assets, for Traffic, Sales, Lead Generation and App Promotion campaigns. You still set the goal, a target cost if you want one, the creatives and the links. TikTok notes it may not be in every account yet.

Automation works best when measurement is reliable and there's plenty of creative to choose from. It optimises towards the events you send it, so broken tracking teaches it the wrong thing.

TikTok Shop and GMV Max

TikTok Shop lets people buy inside the app, from product cards in videos, LIVE streams and the Shop tab. Since July 2025, GMV Max has been the default and only campaign type for TikTok Shop ads: you set a target return on investment and it optimises gross merchandise value. Older video, product and LIVE shopping campaigns keep running but can't be created or edited, with a few exceptions.

A brand that sells both on its site and in TikTok Shop needs both measured. Shop sales happen inside TikTok; site sales come back through the Pixel and the Events API.

Targeting and audiences

Targeting covers age, gender, location and language; interests and behaviours, based on what people watch and interact with in the app; custom audiences from customer lists, website or app activity and TikTok engagement; and lookalikes. As on other platforms, broad targeting with strong creative often beats narrow audiences, because delivery finds buyers from how people respond.

The rules for minors are strict:

  • TikTok shows no personalised ads to 13–17-year-olds in the EEA, the UK, Switzerland, Brazil, Mexico and Colombia.
  • In many other regions it limits targeting of under-18s to age, language, location and device.
  • TikTok Shop sales and lead generation campaigns can't target under-18s at all.
  • In the EU, the Digital Services Act bans ads based on profiling for users a platform knows are minors.

Budgets and bidding

TikTok's minimums are $50 a day, or the same as a lifetime budget, per campaign, and $20 a day per ad group. Bidding comes in two kinds: spend-based Maximum Results, which gets the most conversions for the budget, and goal-based Target cost per result, which aims at a cost per conversion you set. For purchases, Highest Value optimises for order value instead of the number of orders.

Change budgets in steps rather than leaps, and give each change a few days. Delivery adjusts after big changes, and results often dip while it does.

A performance playbook

  1. Measure first. Get the Pixel and the Events API live, deduplicated and passing purchase values before spending seriously.
  2. Test creative, not settings. Try several hooks and formats a week, and judge them on hook rate (2-second video views divided by impressions), click-through rate and cost per purchase.
  3. Expect fatigue. Winners fade as more people see them again, often within weeks. Keep new creative coming, and retire ads when their cost per purchase climbs.
  4. Scale in steps. Raise budgets gradually, and watch cost per purchase, not just volume.
  5. Check what the ads add. A lift study shows how many sales are incremental, and it calibrates your attribution.

TikTok doesn't publish benchmarks, so targets should come from your margins: the cost per purchase you can afford, and the return on ad spend that makes it profitable.

Measurement

The TikTok Pixel measures what people do on your site, and the Events API sends the same actions from your server. When both send an event, give it the same event ID in each; TikTok records the first one it receives, so a purchase isn't counted twice. Ads Manager lets you choose the attribution windows, such as one or seven days after a click and up to a day after a view.

Conversion Lift studies split people at random into a group that can see the ads and a control group that can't. The difference in conversions between them is what the ads really add.

Rules and regions

In January 2026 TikTok's US operations moved into a new joint venture, part-owned by Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX, which oversees US data security, the recommendation algorithm and content moderation. Advertisers still buy through TikTok Ads Manager.

Every ad also goes through TikTok's review against its advertising policies, and product claims, including for skincare, have to stand up to it. Build review time into launch plans.

A short checklist

  • The Pixel and Events API live, deduplicated with event IDs, and passing purchase values.
  • Three or more new creatives a week, each built around its first three seconds.
  • Spark Ads from creators whose posts already perform.
  • Targets for hook rate, click-through rate and cost per purchase, set from your own margins.
  • Budgets raised in steps, never overnight.
  • A lift study before you decide how big TikTok should be in your mix.
  • The rules for minors and the ad policies checked for every market.

Common questions

How much does it cost to advertise on TikTok?

There's no fixed price: you set a budget and bid in an auction. The minimums are $50 a day per campaign and $20 per ad group, but a meaningful test needs more, plus new creative every week.

Are TikTok ads only for young audiences?

No. Ads reach adults of every age, and targeting teenagers is heavily restricted. What matters more is whether the product suits a video that shows it working.

Should we use Smart+ from the start?

Once measurement is reliable and there's enough creative to test. Automation optimises towards the events you send, so broken tracking teaches it the wrong thing.

Do we need a TikTok Shop?

No. Ads can send people to your own site. A Shop adds checkout inside the app, and its ads run as GMV Max campaigns.
