A practical guide to Google Ads in 2026, covering campaign types, where ads show, the auction and Ad Rank, Smart Bidding and AI Max, Performance Max and measurement.
Google Ads is the oldest and largest of the ad platforms, and in 2026 it is also one of the most automated. This guide covers what you choose, what Google's AI decides for you, and what you need in place for it to work.
What is Google Ads?
Google Ads places paid ads where people search, watch and browse: Google Search, YouTube, Gmail, Discover, Maps and millions of partner sites and apps. You choose a campaign type and a goal, give Google your ads, products and conversion data, and Google's auction and bidding systems decide where each ad shows and what it costs.
Campaign types
| Campaign | Where it runs | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Search | Google Search results and search partners | People already searching for what you sell |
| Performance Max | All Google Ads inventory from one campaign | Sales and leads across every channel |
| Shopping | The Shopping tab, Search, Images, Maps, YouTube and Gmail | Products with a price and a photo |
| Demand Gen | YouTube and Shorts, Discover, Gmail and the Display Network | New customers through images and video |
| Video | YouTube and video partners | Reach and consideration |
| Display | Sites and apps on the Display Network | Reaching past visitors again (moving into Demand Gen) |
| App | Search, Google Play, YouTube, Discover and Display | App installs and engagement |
Two changes matter this year. Display campaigns are moving into Demand Gen, with a migration tool since June 2026. And AI Max for Search left beta in April 2026, so broad, keywordless matching is now a standard part of Search.
Where ads show and the "Sponsored results" label
On Google Search, text ads now sit together under a single "Sponsored results" label, introduced in October 2025. The label stays visible as people scroll, a "Hide sponsored results" control collapses the group, and a group never holds more than four text ads. Shopping ads carry their own "Sponsored products" label.
Away from Search, ads appear across YouTube (in-stream, in-feed and Shorts), the Discover feed, the Gmail Promotions tab, Google Maps and the Display Network of partner sites and apps. On YouTube, skippable in-stream ads can be skipped after 5 seconds, bumpers run for up to 6 seconds, and Shorts ads sit between Shorts, where people swipe to move on.
Ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode
Search, Shopping and Performance Max ads can appear above or below AI Overviews in every market where AI Overviews run, and inside them in English in 12 markets, including the US. There is no separate opt-out, targeting or reporting for these placements: they come from your existing campaigns.
Ads in AI Mode are still in testing in the US. Google has said the new formats will be clearly labelled "Sponsored".
The auction and Ad Rank
Every search runs an auction, and Google orders ads by Ad Rank. Ad Rank weighs your bid, the quality of your ad and landing page, the Ad Rank thresholds for that position, the competitiveness of the auction, the context of the search (location, device, time and more) and the expected impact of your assets, such as sitelinks.
The highest bid doesn't always win. And you pay less than your maximum: Google charges only what's needed to clear the thresholds and beat the Ad Rank of the advertiser directly below you.
Smart Bidding and AI Max
Smart Bidding uses Google AI to set a bid in every auction for conversions or conversion value. The main strategies are Maximize conversions, Maximize conversion value, Target CPA and Target ROAS. A new strategy usually needs one or two conversion cycles to learn, so judge it over weeks, not days.
AI Max for Search extends a Search campaign beyond its keywords. It adds search term matching (broad match plus keywordless matching), text customisation that adapts your headlines to each search, and final URL expansion that can send people to a more relevant page. Location, brand and URL controls keep it within bounds. Google reports 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar cost per acquisition or return on ad spend (Google internal data, 2025). Treat that as Google's figure, not a promise.
Performance Max and the channel report
Performance Max is a goal-based campaign that reaches all Google Ads inventory from one campaign: Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. Its inputs are asset groups:
- Headlines: 3–15 of up to 30 characters, plus up to 5 long headlines of 90.
- Descriptions: 2–5 of up to 90 characters.
- Images: landscape, square and portrait, up to 20.
- Logos.
- Videos: landscape, square or vertical, 10 seconds or longer.
You can add optional audience signals and up to 50 search themes, and a Merchant Center feed if you sell products.
The long-standing complaint about Performance Max was that it hid where results came from. Since November 2025 every Performance Max campaign has a channel performance report, which follows impressions, interactions and results by channel. It also separates ads that use your product data from other ads.
Add brand exclusions, negative keywords and the search terms report, and Performance Max is far easier to steer than it used to be.
Shopping and Merchant Center
Shopping ads show a product photo, its price and your store name, and they are built from product data rather than keywords. That data lives in Merchant Center. Every product needs an ID, title, description, link, image link, availability and price, and the quality of those fields decides how often and where your products show. Your products can also appear in free listings across Search, Maps, YouTube, Images and Lens.
Local inventory adds in-store stock, so people nearby can see a product is available to pick up today. Shopping runs as a standard Shopping campaign or inside Performance Max.
Measurement: the tag, enhanced conversions and consent
- The Google tag is one tag for Google Ads and Google Analytics. Primary conversion actions drive bidding; secondary ones are observed only.
- Enhanced conversions add first-party data, such as an email address, normalised and hashed with SHA-256, to match conversions to signed-in Google accounts. Since June 2026, web and lead enhanced conversions share one setting.
- Consent mode passes your visitors' choices to Google through four consent types:
ad_storage,analytics_storage,ad_user_dataandad_personalization. You need it for visitors from the EEA, the UK and Switzerland under Google's EU user consent policy, andad_user_datais required for enhanced conversions. - The Google tag gateway serves the tag from your own domain. Google reports it recovers signals that would otherwise be lost.
- Data Manager now handles offline and lead conversion uploads.
- Attribution: data-driven attribution is the default; the only other model left is last click.
Budgets and billing
There are no setup fees or subscriptions. You set an average daily budget: Google may spend up to twice that on a given day, but never more than 30.4 times it over a month. Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can also run on a total budget for 3 to 90 days. For Search, you typically pay per click, and never more than your maximum.
Most ads are reviewed within one business day. Advertiser verification, when Google asks for it, can take a few days longer.
Google, Meta and ChatGPT ads compared
| Compare | Google Ads | Meta ads | ChatGPT ads |
|---|---|---|---|
| What triggers the ad | Searches and intent, plus audiences on YouTube and Display | People and their interests | The context of the conversation |
| Where ads show | Search, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Maps, partner sites | Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads, WhatsApp | Below ChatGPT's answers |
| Label | "Sponsored results", "Sponsored products" | "Ad" | "Sponsored" |
| Best for | Capturing demand that already exists | Creating demand with visual creative | Reaching people mid-decision |
Most businesses that sell online end up using Google to capture demand and Meta to create it. ChatGPT ads are the newest option for reaching people while they research. See our guides to Meta ads and ChatGPT ads.
How to get started
- Set up tracking first: the Google tag or Tag Manager, your conversion actions, enhanced conversions and consent mode.
- Link Merchant Center if you sell products, and fix feed errors before you spend.
- Start with Search on the terms you know convert, with AI Max if you want wider matching.
- Add Performance Max once tracking and the feed are solid, with brand exclusions and negative keywords.
- Use Smart Bidding with a realistic Target CPA or Target ROAS, and give it one or two conversion cycles.
- Review weekly: search terms, the channel report, and assets that need replacing.
If you'd rather hand it over, our Google Ads service covers the whole loop: tracking, feeds, campaigns, creative, landing pages and weekly reporting.
Common questions
How much does Google Ads cost?
You set the budget. There's no minimum or fee, and for most Search campaigns you pay per click, never more than your maximum. What a click costs depends on your market and on Ad Rank, so better ads and landing pages lower it.
Can I keep my ads out of AI Overviews?
No. Ads above, below and inside AI Overviews come from your Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns, and there is no separate opt-out.
Do I need Performance Max?
Not at first. Search covers people who are already looking. Performance Max makes sense once you have reliable conversion tracking, good images and videos and, for retailers, a clean product feed.
Is Display going away?
Display is moving into Demand Gen. Google opened a migration tool in June 2026, and new display-style campaigns will increasingly run inside Demand Gen.
