People no longer only type three words into a search box. They describe a problem, compare options and ask for advice, and a growing share of that happens in ChatGPT. OpenAI now lets businesses place ads inside those conversations. This guide covers how they work, how they differ from search ads, and what to fix on your website before you spend anything.

## What are ChatGPT ads?

ChatGPT ads, also called OpenAI Ads, are sponsored placements shown alongside ChatGPT's answers. Instead of matching an ad to a keyword, OpenAI matches it to the context of the conversation: what the person is asking, the problem behind the question and the options they are weighing.

OpenAI began testing ads in early 2026 through its sales team and large agency partners. In May 2026 it opened a self-serve **Ads Manager** to businesses in the United States, with no minimum spend, and it has been adding markets since. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT reaches around a billion people every week, which makes this one of the largest new ad surfaces in years.

## Where ads appear and who sees them

- **Placement.** Ads appear below an answer, visually separated from it and labelled **Sponsored**. A typical ad is a card with a title, a short description, an image and a link.
- **Audience.** Ads are shown to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users do not see them.
- **Sensitive topics.** Ads are kept away from conversations about sensitive subjects such as health, mental health and politics.
- **User control.** People can see why an ad was shown, hide ads and manage how ads are personalised.

OpenAI's stated principles are that ads never influence ChatGPT's answers, conversations stay private from advertisers and user data is never sold. For brands this matters: you cannot buy a better answer. You can only earn a relevant spot next to one.

## ChatGPT ads vs search ads

| Compare | Search ads | ChatGPT ads |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Matching | Keywords you bid on | The context of the conversation |
| User intent | Short query, fast click | Detailed question, research and comparison |
| What you write | Keyword lists and match types | Context hints that describe needs and situations |
| Where it shows | Results page | Below an answer, labelled Sponsored |
| Buying | Mostly CPC auctions | CPC or CPM |

The biggest shift is the moment you reach someone. On a results page they want a link. In ChatGPT they are often halfway through a decision, asking which option fits their situation, what it will cost or who they should trust. Ads that answer that underlying question tend to fit. Generic brand slogans tend not to.

## Targeting with context hints

There is no keyword bidding. Advertisers write **context hints**: plain-language descriptions of the topics, needs and situations where their offer is relevant. OpenAI combines those hints with your ad copy, your landing page content and the conversation itself to decide when an ad is eligible.

A few things follow from this:

- Hints are not exact-match keywords. They describe a situation ("a small team moving off spreadsheets to a CRM"), not a phrase.
- There is no guarantee that an ad will show for a specific prompt.
- Your landing page is part of the targeting signal. A vague page weakens an otherwise good ad.

Write hints the way your customers talk about their problem, not the way your team talks about the product.

## Pricing, bidding and budgets

- **Buying models.** Campaigns can buy on cost per click (CPC) or cost per thousand impressions (CPM).
- **Bids.** For CPC campaigns you set a maximum bid. OpenAI recommends starting at around $3–$5 per click.
- **Budgets.** Self-serve Ads Manager has no minimum spend commitment. Lapis reports a minimum daily campaign budget of $25.
- **Partners.** Businesses that prefer a managed approach can buy through agency holding companies such as Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis and WPP, or through a growing list of ad technology partners.

As with any new channel, early costs and results vary widely. Treat the first campaigns as structured experiments, not a scaled media plan.

## Privacy and what advertisers see

Advertisers never receive conversations, chat history, memories or personal details such as a user's name, email, precise location or IP address. Reporting is aggregated:

- Impressions, clicks and spend
- Click-through rate (CTR), CPC and CPM
- Conversions, when you set up measurement

For conversions OpenAI offers a **pixel** for your website and a server-side **Conversions API**. Both report what happens after the click, such as a purchase, a lead or a sign-up, without exposing who the person was.

## How to get started

1. **Create an account** in Ads Manager at [ads.openai.com](https://ads.openai.com/). OpenAI handles verification and eligibility.
2. **Map the buyer questions** your offer actually answers. Start with the questions your sales team hears every week.
3. **Write context hints and ads** for each group of questions, with a clear, specific promise instead of a generic claim.
4. **Point each ad at a matching landing page**, not your homepage.
5. **Install measurement**, the pixel and ideally the Conversions API, before launch, so the first budget produces learning.
6. **Launch small and iterate.** Compare message themes, keep what converts and write the next round from what you learned.

## Get your website ready

Most of the work that makes ChatGPT ads perform happens on your website, not in Ads Manager. It is the same work that helps assistants cite you organically, which we cover in [why your website still matters in the age of AI search](/insights/websites-still-matter-for-ai-search).

- **One page per question.** Someone who asks how to cut ad spend should land on a page about cutting ad spend. Cover the problem, your solution, proof and a clear next step.
- **Specific, honest copy.** Your page content is part of the matching signal. Plain descriptions of who you help and how beat broad marketing language.
- **Speed on mobile.** Much of ChatGPT use happens on phones. A slow page wastes a paid click.
- **Reliable tracking.** A server-side Conversions API setup survives ad blockers and browser privacy limits far better than a pixel alone, and it is what makes CPC bidding worth optimising.
- **Structured content.** Clear headings, summaries and structured data help both the ad system and the assistant understand what the page is about.

Want help with any of this? Our [ChatGPT Ads](/services/chatgpt-ads) service covers the whole loop: buyer-question research, context hints and ad copy, prompt-matched landing pages and Conversions API tracking.

## Common questions

### Do ads change ChatGPT's answers?

No. OpenAI states that answers are independent of ads, and ads are shown separately and labelled as sponsored.

### Can I target specific prompts or keywords?

No. You describe relevant situations with context hints, and OpenAI decides eligibility from the whole conversation, your ad and your landing page.

### Is there a minimum spend?

Not in self-serve Ads Manager. Managed buying through OpenAI or agency partners can have its own commitments.

### Who will see my ads?

Logged-in adults on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans, in markets where ads are available. Paid Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users do not see ads.

### Are ChatGPT ads right for my business?

They suit businesses whose customers research before they buy: services, software, considered purchases and anything people ask advice about. If your customers compare options in ChatGPT today, it is worth a small, well-measured test.
